A smart call for the idiot box?

Videocon has just signed a five-year agreement with the century-old global brand Philips to make and sell its televisions in India. But can Videocon, which bases itself on a low-cost model with large manufacturing facilities, be able to avoid a strategic collision with Philips, better known for its high priced range of goods? Is there learning from Videocon’s past experiences with Akai and Toshiba?

It was the 1980s when Indians had started waking up to an exciting news of colour televisions being sold in mass volumes in the rest of the world. But then, Indian companies of course had neither the competence nor the financial muscle to develop such a technically advanced (at that time) proposition. Somewhere during that decade (1985 to be precise), an upstart, young, first generation entrepreneur in India got a brainwave to enter into a technical tie-up with a foreign corporation to launch colour televisions in India. V. N. Dhoot pulled off the biggest coup at that time and tied up with Toshiba to launch India’s first colour televisions.

That one classic move allowed Videocon, along with BPL (which later entered the colour TV market), to dominate the Indian television market in the 80s. But in 1991, the opening up of the economy opened the doors for MNCs such as Samsung, Sony, et al, which flooded the market with superior products & unique strategies (for instance, financing schemes). While BPL faded into oblivion, Videocon survived the onslaught, but just, and lost market shares in a drove. But a spate of intelligent diversification and shrewdly tactical advertising got Videocon back into the market share battle as an extremely significant player. Even the recent past seems to be comfortably ensconced – the company’s stock has outperformed the market in the last one quarter, rising 2.18% as against 0.42% decline in the Sensex. Videocon’s net profit too rose 117.9% to Rs.1.31 billion in Q3 ‘09 against Rs.604.3 million in Q3 ‘08.

And out of the blue, now comes news from Videocon of a spanking five-year licensing deal with the Amsterdam-based Royal Philips Electronics, which would allow Videocon to manufacture and sell TV sets under the Philips brand in India (for which Videocon will pay a royalty of 3% to the Dutch electronics firm).

While on the face of it, the deal is a splendid display of the negotiating power Videocon has gained over the years, bubbling under are also issues that could hit Videocon in its most strategic imperatives – most important being the fact that while Videocon has believed in leveraging its low-cost large manufacturing set up, the Philips brand has traditionally shied away from the price leadership model. Is this a cultural cum strategic collision case in the making? Won’t the deal go at loggerheads with the Videocon brand selling strategy?

Work-wise

Katrina Kaif has proved that she is a thorough professional and her work life is her priority, for now at least. When her flight to London was cancelled and she couldn’t attend her grandfather’s 90th birthday, instead of moaning over it, the Partner star decided to not waste a single minute and set off to re-dub portions of her upcoming movie Rajneeti, which she felt could be improved. One girl who believes in party hard, work harder, Katrina looks set to not just be a pretty face but make her mark in acting too.

Once an underdog... still an underdog!

AMD, after losing its sheen during the past few years, is now trying to hit back at competition by targeting emerging markets like India. But will that alone suffice for an ailing chipmaker? B&E chats up with AMD top managers in US and India. by Steven Philip Warner, Amir Moin & Hsotuhsa Alobrah

Semiconductor manufacturing firms depend on four types of market segments – government, telecommunication & electronics goods firms, retail buyers and PC manufacturers. For AMD, you could add a fifth one – non-metro India. It’s strange that a 40 year-old native of Sunnyvale, California, should suddenly dream big of the smaller towns in the country. One natural reason is that Intel has largely gained supremacy in the big saturated quality-conscious metros; the second: it has little choice!

Eight years back, AMD looked like the unknown gladiator, who’d become an Intel-killer very soon. It almost got there; only almost. From 17% in Q3, 2000, it’s global market share in the semiconductor industry had witnessed a dramatic rise to 27% by end of 2001. The battle started getting dirty, with both Intel and AMD willing to play it out on the price front. None wanted to give up the market share advantage, and when Q4, 2007 ended, AMD had grown its share marginally to 28.7%. Then began the great slip, with AMD beginning to lose its market share in developed nations to newer players, across categories like server and workstations. When Q4, 2009 ended, its pie had fallen to 12.1%, while that of Intel had risen to 80.1% (as per the 2010 iSupply report). AMD needed a cure. It decided to do what Intel’s Otellini did more than two years back – milk the Indian cows! Patrick Wang, Senior Vice-President, Equity Research (Semiconductors) of Wedbush Morgan Securities, while speaking to B&E from New York justifies the move for AMD as he says, “India represents one of the most significant growth opportunities for AMD. Its strategy of addressing high volume, mainstream segments for notebooks, desktops and servers also fits in well with developing communities.”

Numbers prove why AMD is being forced to believe in the power of the Indian gods. For the first time, after a dozen quarters, the company managed to deliver positive bottomlines, a figure of $1.45 billion during Q4, 2009. And if you thought this was recovery, then think again. It was during the very quarter that AMD won $1.25 billion in “damages”, the outcome of a suit filed against Intel, about half-a-decade back – a significant proportion of the Q4 ‘profit’.

The most recent development in this India-foray, was the March 31, 2010 launch of a new server platform by AMD (the Opteron 6000 Series) in New Delhi. The server features the world’s first 8 & 12 core x86 processor, for both the high volume and value server market in the Indian subcontinent. “AMD is redefining the server market, based on current customer requirement,” says Ravi Swaminathan, MD and Vice-President (Sales and Marketing), AMD India to B&E.

The minority measure mystery

Rangnath Commission’s rejection of linguistic minorities is illogical and absurd

However, the commission ignored this fact and went on to recommend reservation on the basis of caste and religion. The entire focus of Rangnath Commission has gone so deeply into religious minorities, especially Muslims, that it has tried to reject even the term ‘Linguistic Minorities,’ by saying, “The term ‘Linguistic Minorities’ as such has not been defined in the Constitution or any other law. The term minority has been defined in Section 2 of the National Commission for Minorities Act with reference to the religious minorities only.” This observation is a complete contradiction of its own report in which the commission has written in Chapter 2 that “Article 29 has the word ‘minorities’ in its marginal heading but speaks of “Any sections of citizens… having a distinct language, script or culture.” It further notes that “Article 30 speaks specifically of two categories of minorities – ‘Religious and Linguistic’. The remaining two Articles -350 A and 350 B relate to linguistic minority only.”

Clearly, the panel was not at all in a mood to even recognise linguistic minorities as a basis to determine backwardness. “The Bhojpuri community has been the most backward and neglected since India’s independence,” comments Shaheed Rahim, senior media researcher at Observer Research Foundation and the founder of Kashika Institute in Delhi. He said, “Kashika, Angika, Vajjika and Purabiya people are long neglected.”
