Companies can create win-win situations for one and all

His mantra is that through strategic CSR, companies can create win-win situations for one and all. However, L.N.Mittal reiterates that the company’s main responsibility is towards its shareholders; as told to B&E’s Ruchika Chawla

B&E: What are your views on Mr. Warren Buffet as a businessman and his strategies? What do you think of his commitment to donate close to US $41 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation?
LNM:
Warren Buffet is one the most renowned and respected businessmen in the world. His donation to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation can only be greatly admired. The world is very fortunate that influential figures such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are committing themselves in such a major way to help solve the world’s major problems.

B&E: Who do you think will be Mr. Buffet’s successor? Do you have such an elaborate plan laid out on how you would like to distribute your wealth?
LNM:
I think that is a question for Mr. Buffet not myself! As a family, we have been active for some time in philanthropic work, largely in India. In recent months we have started to have a discussion as a family as to how we can do more socially. We definitely feel ready to commit more time now to these aspects and we are looking at identifying the right area to focus on. As a company, we have a very strong Corporate Responsibility Programme that reflects our position as one of the world’s leading companies. Part of this responsibility, we have an ArcelorMittal Foundation which supports and develops social investment projects all around our sites which primarily focuses on health, education and social inclusion. We also have the Mittal Champion Trust which is focussed to improve Indian athletes and their performance at major sporting events.
